Operations Group

Welcome to the website of the Operations Group!

Our group is part of the department of Business Administration of the University of Zurich. It is a collaboration of the chairs of

Mathematics for Business and Economics,
Quantitative Business Administration, and
Sustainable Operations Management.

Operations Management is defined as the design, operation, and improvement of the systems that create and deliver the firm's primary products and services. It is:

  • a management function,
  • an organization's core function,
  • in every organization whether Service or Manufacturing, profit or not-for-profit.

Operations Management involves the conversion of inputs (resources) such as people, material, and money into outputs such as goods and services. About one third of the activities of the leading management consultancy firms in the world deal with operations.

In our research we make use of methods such as stochastic dynamic optimization, stochastic modelling, dynamic programming, Markov chains, Markov decision processes, mathematical programming, queueing theory, simulation, decision theory, game theory, and empirical research.
